Did you know that in 2015 it is estimated that 1,658,370 new cancer cases will be diagnosed and 589,430 deaths will be caused by cancer in the US? The risk of an American man developing cancer in his lifetime is a little less than one in two and the risk of an American woman developing cancer in her lifetime is a little more than one in three. Those are some very scary statistics!!
Despite these grave statistics, the death rate of all cancers combined has decreased 22% since the early 1990’s. The truth is progress has been made in the world of cancer treatments thanks to the generous donations brought in by the numerous cancer foundations in existence, primarily the Relay for Life. Each year, more than 4 million people take part in raising money to find a cure for cancer by participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. To date, it is estimated that Relay for Life has raised nearly $5 billion to fight cancer.
If you have never been a part of a Relay for Life event, I strongly encourage you to attend one this year. Your participation in this event will not only help raise money for finding a cure for cancer but also celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer and remember those who have lost their lives. Chances are, if you do not know anyone personally who has had to battle cancer, you do know an individual who has through a family member, friend, co-worker or within your community.
This year, I am teaming up with Nikki Ostby from Team Mary Beth to raise money for the Fillmore county Relay for Life by hosting an afternoon/evening of mini sessions June 14, 2015. For those of you not familiar with Mary Beth’s story please read below.
“My mom, Mary Beth was diagnosed with stage 4 non-small cell (nonsmokers) lung cancer in December of 2010. In March, 2013 we received the news we prayed we never would, the cancer had spread to her brain. In December 2013, she lost her hard fought battle. Throughout the course of those 3 years of fighting, she never took the smile off her face, she never wanted sympathy and most importantly she lived every day to its fullest. My mom was a loving, compassionate, thoughtful, caring and wonderful woman. I not only was blessed to caller her mom but I was also blessed to have her as my best friend. We need to find a cure!”
